Wadhwana lake in Dabhoi taluka filled near danger level mark

Located at 10 kms from Dabhoi and 30 kilometers from Vadodara, Wadhwana lake is water source for the nearby villages but most importantly popular for bird watching site. The place is home to various species of exotic birds comes every year in big numbers. Species like storks, terns, geese, ducks, ibis, flamingos and spoonbills are treat to watch there.

Built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III the lake is the second largest in Gujarat known as wetland and also Eco tourism campsite. Spread at 10.38 square kilometer the Vadvana wetland gets the recognition of 'Wetland of National Importance' due to its importance and unmatched environmental value. The water of the lake is used for supply water to nearby villages for irrigation on around 17000 hectares area.

On Tuesday the Lake is filled with water nearing the danger mark. At present the mark reached 54.83 meters and the danger level is 55.63 meters. This lake extending in Dabhoi and Sankheda talukas is a source of irrigation for agriculture.

Recently, the lake has been recognized as a Ramsar site for its noble wetland - mudflats that facilitate bird breeding and rearing. The lake is originally for irrigation purposes and the swampy land created by the declining water level remains a warm respite for migratory birds to escape the extreme cold of their icy region.

The lake is mainly drained of rainwater from the Orsang River. Now the lake is also filled with Narmada water when needed. Thus, the lake is a nutrient for both agriculture and bird life. The filled water level indicates good cultivation.
