Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced ex-gratia compensation for the eight victims of the tragic drowning incident in Dehgam on Friday.

The families of each deceased will receive Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF), while those injured will be granted Rs 50,000.

The Prime Minister's Office shared the news on X, stating: "PM Modi has announced Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in the Dehgam incident, and Rs 50,000 for the injured."

Eight youths, aged between 20 and 25, drowned in the Meshwo at Vasna-Sogathi village in Dehgam taluka of Gandhinagar on Friday evening.

Their bodies were recovered by local swimmers and the Gandhinagar fire brigade.

The victims had waded into the river to bathe, as they were going to carry out the ritual immersion of a Ganesha idol.

There was no heavy flow of water, but the victims got caught in a whirlpool and died.
