A couple from Gozaria village in Mehsana were caught at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi for possessing tampered passports on Sep 2.
The couple had allegedly torn pages of their passports on the instructions of their travel agent, airport sources said on Sunday.
According to the FIR filed with the Indira Gandhi International airport police, Ashish Patel and his wife Heena Patel from Jotana had arrived from Kathmandu in Nepal to IGI airport.
During the immigration clearance, it was observed that pages 4, 6, and 8 in both the passports were torn in an attempt to remove visa entries.
After this, Indira Gandhi International police registered a case of cheating under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Passport Act against Ashish and Heena and began an investigation.
Sources privy to the development said that there is a modus operandi of tearing the pages which had fake visa stamps of other countries.
On the query regarding travelling from Kathmandu instead of any Indian airport, the source said that there has been a new trend that one can get a seaman identity to travel to another country on a seaman visa.
But, after reaching a particular country during transit, they disappear and finally reach their destination — the US — in an illegal manner.
On Aug 22, a man from the Ranip area of the city named Krupesh Patel was apprehended at the IGI airport in Delhi.
Earlier, Patel was caught in 2019 at the Mumbai airport from where he tried to attempt to fly to Canada.
