A 37-year-old man, Suresh Koshti, died while in custody at Khokhra police station on Wednesday.
Khokhra police registered a case of accidental death, after doctors at LG Hospital declared Koshti 'brought dead'.
Police said Koshti was called for questioning after a woman made an application against him alleging harassment.
Assistant commissioner of police Krunal Desai said, "Koshti was called for questioning and after a brief stay in the police station, he complained of chest pain and was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead.The postmortem was conducted by a panel of doctors at Civil Hospital."
A R Dhavan, Khokhra police inspector, said, "Koshti is divorced and the woman has three children. He was called to the police station for questioning. He was not detained, but within three minutes of questioning, he complained of chest pain and was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
According to the complainant, the accused had been harassing her for the past few month." Dhavan said the entire incident has been recorded with timings in the station dairy.
Sources said that Koshti's family members were there and were also with him at LG Hospital. They initially refused to accept the body, but later did so and carried out his last rites.
The family was alleging that Koshti was beaten up by police, however, the preliminary postmortem report does not mention any injury marks."
The 'Crime in India 2021' report revealed that of the 88 custodial deaths in the country that year, Gujarat accounted for more than one-fourth, with 23.
Maharashtra accounted for 23% and Andhra Pradesh was a distant third, having reported six deaths in police custody.
