After a two-year gap, Gujarat University has finally appointed new deans to six faculties following the implementation of the Gujarat Public Universities Act, 2023.
The newly appointed deans will serve until 2029, with three out of the six faculties being led by female professors.
The Gujarat Public Universities Act, 2023 mandates that new dean elections should be conducted before the current dean's term ends.
However, elections were not held for over two years after the previous deans' terms expired, leaving Gujarat University operating without deans during this period.
The new act has extended the term for deans from three to five years and transferred the authority to appoint deans to the vice- chancellor, eliminating the election process.
The appointment of deans comes a year after the implementation of the act and, according to sources, it has been done as preparation for an upcoming inspection by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), as the absence of faculty deans would mean a lower ranking.
The term will be considered complete either after five years or upon reaching the age of 62, whichever comes first.
