The proposed cruise circuits include Porbandar–Veraval–Diu, Dwarka–Okha–Jamnagar, and Padala Island–Rann of Kutch.
The initiative follows the successful launch of the Ro-Pax ferry service between Hazira and Ghogha in 2017, and is part of a broader vision to transform Gujarat into a prominent cruise tourism destination under the Cruise Bharat Mission.
Cruise Bharat Mission: Gujarat Charts Its Course
As part of the Cruise Bharat Mission, launched last year to position India as a global cruise tourism hub by 2029, Gujarat Maritime Board recently conducted a workshop to define a strategic cruise shipping policy for the state. The plan outlines three key cruise clusters:
- Cluster 1: Padala Island – Rann of Kutch
- Cluster 2: Porbandar – Veraval – Diu
- Cluster 3: Dwarka – Okha – Jamnagar
Each circuit is carefully designed to fall within a 100-km radius of significant religious, cultural, and ecological attractions—making them ideal for domestic and international tourists alike.
Focus on Tourism and Local Economy
The clusters will connect travelers to iconic locations such as:
- Dwarka: A major pilgrimage site and part of the Char Dham
- Diu: A serene island with Portuguese-era heritage
- Veraval: Gateway to Somnath Temple
- Rann of Kutch: A vast salt marsh known for the Rann Utsav
- Jamnagar and Porbandar: Rich in both history and biodiversity
Officials say the circuits will not only enhance the tourist experience but also create jobs, boost the local economy, and put Gujarat on the global cruise tourism map.
Gujarat Catching Up on Cruise Infrastructure
While states like Maharashtra (Mumbai), Kerala (Kochi), Tamil Nadu (Chennai), and Goa (Mormugao) have advanced cruise terminals, Gujarat has lagged behind. The new policy aims to bridge this gap with modern port facilities, private sector participation, and integrated tourism development plans.
