Gujarat yesterday recorded 5.81 lakh vaccinations against COVID-19 in a single day. With this, the number of vaccinations has gone over 3.50 crore. Gujarat has a population of 6.50 crore.
According to a state government spokesperson, out of the 4.94 crore population in the state, entitled for the vaccine, more than 2.64 crore people have been given the first dose and over 85.43 lakh the second dose.
Gujarat had started vaccinations from January 16.
As the vaccination drive progressed and the state continued to vaccinate a large number of people, there were days when the vaccination had to be stopped for a couple of days on different occasions due to shortage of shots.
With the impending third wave, speeding up vaccinations is in Gujarat's interest as it had witnessed over 14,000 cases in a single day during the peak of second wave.
There was a scramble for beds with oxygen and ventilators and, long queues could be witnessed outside government hospitals for admissions.
The numbers are currently on decline. In the last 24 hours that ended at 5pm on Thursday, the state reported 24 new cases and no deaths.
The total number of COVID-19 in the state stands at 8,24,978 and the death toll at 10,076.
