Police in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar districts seized 65 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL), six bottles of beer and 16 litres of country liquor every hour in the last two calendar years.
The state government presented this information in the assembly in reply to a question by Danilimda MLA Shailesh Parmar seeking details of liquor seized in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar cities and districts.
The reply said that between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2022, Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad police seized 11.34 lakh bottles of IMFL, worth Rs 35.89 crore, 99,811 beer bottles worth Rs 1.06 crore and 2.78 lakh litres of country liquor worth Rs 55.68 lakh.
The data tabled in the assembly reveals that due to Covid restrictions, seizures of IMFL and beer in Ahmedabad city and Gandhinagar district had declined in 2021.
However, when movements returned to normal in 2022, seizures again increased.
In Ahmedabad district (barring city there was no decline in seizures, indicating that the trade was continuing even in 2021.
A senior officer said that during the Covid-affected years of 2020 and 2021, there was strict vigil on vehicle movements especially those entering the city.
He stated that in 2021 there was a decline in the IMFL and beer trade in the cities. However, the country liquor trade continued due to its local nature.
