With the arrival of winter, the price of garlic in Bharuch has soared, crossing ₹500 per kilogram in retail markets and compelling residents to buy in smaller quantities.
In the wholesale market, green and dry garlic are priced between ₹350 and ₹400 per kilogram, while retail prices have reached ₹500 to ₹600 per kilogram.
The surge in garlic prices is attributed to increased demand during winter, as it is a staple ingredient in many seasonal dishes. The supply, however, remains limited, with green garlic currently being sourced from Nashik.
Traders expect relief in one to one-and-a-half months when the locally harvested garlic from Gujarat reaches the market.
Adverse weather conditions have also contributed to the price hike. Farmers report that unseasonal rains and fog have impacted the quality of the garlic crop, causing shriveled produce.
Additionally, insufficient rainfall this year has reduced overall production, further driving up prices.
Despite the high costs, garlic remains essential in everyday cooking, keeping its demand steady. While farmers face challenges in earning fair returns due to low-quality produce, consumers are left grappling with steep prices.
All eyes are now on the upcoming local harvest, which is expected to stabilize the market and provide some respite.
