surveillance squad at Sabarmati Central Jail on Tuesday found a 4G sim card in the possession of a prisoner accused under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act, according to an FIR filed with Ranip police.
Devsi Karangia, a jailer of the surveillance squad, in the FIR said he and five other members of the squad began checking cells on Tuesday afternoon.
During the search, when they were frisking prisoners, they found a sim card in the trouser pocket of an inmate accused of NDPS Act violations.
According to the FIR, the accused, Sultan Shaikh, a resident of Jogeshwari East in Mumbai, was caught a week ago.
The FIR said they checked Shaikh's cell in Barrack 2 of the Circle Yard 2 but did not find any contraband.
Police are now probing who smuggled the sim into the jail and how, and if someone from the jail staff was involved.
Ranip police booked Shaikh under IPC Section 188 for violation of a notification along with charges under the Prisoners Act.
On August 12, a mobile phone was found in the cell of notorious historysheeter Azhar Sheikh alias Azhar Kitli.
