The financially stressed Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has decided to spend Rs 55.32 lakh on installing pictures of Bharat Mata at both ends of every flyover in the city.
The civic body issued two tenders for Rs 27.66 lakh each, to install the images at the ends of every flyover and railway bridge in the city.
Sources said at an earlier standing committee meeting, the civic body had made this decision following a suggestion from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) that every flyover, bridge should have a Bharat Mata image at both ends.
Sources said that the civic body has identified 40 spots where these images will be installed. The bids will be opened on February 13 and after contractors are selected the work will begin.
In August 2022, officials of the civic body's political and executive wings had accepted that the civic body is in severe financial stress and to continue operations had borrowed Rs 350 crore from the state government.
A tender was issued on January 24 in this connection. The design of the images and the structures will be according to the available space.
