The civic body will install 10,000 CCTV cameras to monitor its properties and inhibit encroachment.

These cameras are part of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) strategy of weaving a digital geofence around hundreds of plots it owns. The Smart City Ahmedabad Development Ltd (SCADL), a special purpose vehicle of AMC is planning to implement the land encroachment monitoring system (LEMS) which will ensure real-time monitoring of public plots.

The digital eyes are armed with an AI programme that will alert the zonal estate department if plots are encroached on by people, vehicles, or someone tries to erect illegal structures.

LEMS is a network of 2,000 to 10,000 cameras across the city with connectivity and a software to gather and analyse real time footage and images.

There will be a dashboard which will be part of SCADL's integrated command and control centre (ICCC). Here, data will be processed and monitored.

"Cameras will be geotagged to allow the officials to know real-time status of a government property," the official said, and added that apart from a web version the dashboard will be made available to officials on Android and iOS phones. "Officials will get alerts in case of encroachment and will be able to act quickly," the official said.

The official said that in the first phase, a detailed field survey for each plot will be carried out to finalize infrastructure and bandwidth requirements, and operational and administrative challenges.
