A surveillance squad of Sabarmati Central Jail on Friday found a cellphone from notorious history-sheeter Azhar Sheikh alias Azhar Kitli's cell in the prison, according to an FIR filed with Ranip police on Saturday.
However, when the squad members began searching the cell, Sheikh allegedly threw the cellphone into the toilet and the device was later retrieved from the manhole, the FIR stated.
The FIR mentioned that Jayanti Prajapati, jailer, and other staff of the surveillance squad searched barrack number 2 where Sheikh was lodged.
When a jail guard was checking the place, Sheikh suddenly threw away the phone into the toilet. The device did not have any sim card in it.
The cops are now probing who had smuggled the cellphone into the jail and how, and if someone from the jail was involved in it.
They are also investigating if Sheikh had been running a racket from jail.
Gujarat ATS had on May 31 caught Sheikh, wanted in at least 25 cases including extortion and loot.
