Mohammad Aman Arif Shaikh, 18, a resident of Gomtipur, collapsed while he was appearing for his Class 12 examination at CL High School in Rakhial on Monday afternoon. Aman was taken to Shardaben Hospital where he died soon after admission even as he was provided ventilatory support.
According to Gujarat Secondary & Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) officials, it's a rare occurrence where a Board exam student had died while appearing in the examination. The Board exams for Class 10 and Class 12 started from Monday in Gujarat where about 15 lakh students appeared after a gap of two years.
Hitendrasinh Padheriya, Ahmedabad city DEO, said that Aman was writing the accounting paper which was from 3pm to 6pm. "The CCTV footage from the spot shows that he started vomiting at about 4.30pm. Even after that, he came back but he could not concentrate and started perspiring heavily. As he kept his head on the desk due to uneasiness, the supervisor immediately called upon the principal of the school who called EMRI 108 ambulance to the school at 4.38pm," he said.
A senior doctor at Shardaben Hospital told sources that the emergency technician found Aman's blood pressure very high compared to normal. Thus, he was immediately taken to the hospital at 4:45pm. "The pulse was very weak upon arrival. He was also given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and later taken to the ventilator with medications, but he could not be revived," said the doctor, adding that he passed away at around 6.15pm. "His post-mortem is recommended to ascertain the cause of death."
