As the city gears up for Uttarayan sans Covid restrictions, it is the winged creatures that will face the manja menace.
Even before the festivities began in full swing, Jivdaya Charitable Trust (JCT) in the city received 873 injured birds till January 12.
They were gashed or gravely injured due to the manja. In the corresponding period last year, about 750 injured birds were reported.
Many of these are migratory birds and according to JCT officials, at least 10% of them succumb to injuries.
On average, 70 cases of injured birds are reported at JCT every day.
On Uttarayan and Vasi Uttarayan days, about 500 birds are reported injured per day.
JCT has been running extensive campaigns in collaboration with several other NGOs to facilitate bird rescue.
