Gujarat in 24 hours recorded 8,338 new Covid cases, a rise of 25% in a day compared to 6,679 on Monday. The cases on Monday had represented a 29% drop in a day. Officials of the state health department said that the spike could be explained in the context of weddings and other public events held over the past few days, which increased the overall testing.
The eight municipal corporations accounted for 66% or two-thirds of the daily cases, whereas the rest of Gujarat accounted for one-third of the cases at 2,796. However, the cities accounted for 55% of the deaths 21 of 38. It was the highest daily death tally in seven months and the fifth consecutive day of 30 or more deaths of Covid patients.
Ahmedabad accounted for 32% of the daily cases and recorded a rise of 13% at 2,654. Of the eight cities, four recorded a rise in cases and the rest, a fall. Of the 166 deaths recorded over the past five days, 36 were registered in Ahmedabad.
