The Special Operations Group (SOG) of the city crime branch on Saturday filed a complaint stating that 3,574 fake currency notes were found deposited in 16 different banks and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
According to a complaint filed by an SOG head constable, Harpalsinh Pavansang, the RBI and the 16 banks including two public sector banks SBI and Bank of Baroda found that fake currency notes were deposited with them.
The office-bearers of these banks wrote to the city police commissioner to conduct an inquiry into the case, after which the SOG began an investigation.
During the inquiry, it was found that 205 fake notes in the denomination of Rs 2,000 and 1,585 notes in the denomination of Rs 500 were deposited in the banks.
Apart from that, as many as 569 such notes of Rs 200; 1,095 notes of Rs 100; 102 notes of Rs 50 notes, eight notes of Rs 20 and ten notes of Rs 10 were also deposited in the banks.
Most of the notes had two different numbers and some of them were dummy notes from children's toy sets, said the FIR.
The Detection of Crime Branch police filed a complaint under the Sections 489 B (using as genuine, forged or counterfeit currency-notes or bank notes), 489 C (possession of forged or counterfeit currency notes or bank notes and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC against unknown persons.
