Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina has announced that she plans to return to Bangladesh in December 2026 despite facing the death sentence, multiple criminal cases and possibility of arrest upon arrival. “I may be killed, I may be sent to jail, I may be arrested”, she said in an E-mail response to a question by AFP.
She said,”I am fully aware of my fate. Still I want to go back because my people are calling me”. Hasina fled the country in August 2024 following student-led protests that brought an end to her 15 years rule. Since then She has been living in India at an undisclosed location under tight security.
The United Nations estimates that nearly 14,000 students lost their lives during the massive crackdown on anti-government protests as Sheikh Hasina’s government sought to remain in power. In November, the court of Dhaka awarded her death penalty and convicted her for committing a crime against humanity. However she described this verdict as “politically vengeance dressed up as law”.
