Ranbir Kapoor's Animal, which released in theatres on Friday, has had a great opening at the box office despite getting mixed reviews. The Sandeep Reddy Vanga-directorial has earned Rs 61 crore in India, thus surpassing the opening day collection of Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala revealed that the film’s global gross collection on its opening day is between Rs 110-115 crore. The film also happens to be Ranbir's biggest opening ever.
Shah Rukh's Jawan continues to be the biggest opener of 2023, having raked in Rs 75 crore across India on opening day.
Animal opened alongside Vicky Kaushal's Sam Bahadur, a biographical war drama based on the life of India's first Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. The Meghna Gulzar-directorial has opened at a slower pace and managed to bring in only Rs 5.5 crore in India.
Animal, also featuring Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Rashmika Mandanna, is centred around a dysfunctional father-son relationship. Vanga, who faced criticism for the portrayal of toxic themes in his previous outings—Arjun Reddy and its Hindi remake Kabir Singh—received similar responses from many after Animal. Even as the film receives flak for the crude violence and misogyny, fans and some critics praised Ranbir for his performance.
