The NGO has got a big boost as it has been granted the Foreign Contribution Registration Act (FCRA) licence by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for five years, as per a reports.

This means that the Meer Foundation will now be able to receive foreign grants.

Those who hold the Overseas Citizen of India can also send aid to the foundation.

However, Non-resident Indians (NRIs), who still hold an Indian passport, are not applicable under this license.

Meer Foundation, which works for acid attack survivors and was started by Shah Rukh Khan in 2013, was granted this license on May 31, 2024.

As per the MHA guidelines, an NGO can apply for an FCRA license with definite purposes such as cultural, economic, educational, religious or social programmes.

During the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, in April 2020, Meer Foundation helped turn Shah Rukh Khan’s Khar office into a quarantine centre for asymptomatic patients.

Later, it was turned into an ICU for critical patients. Meer Foundation looked after the day-night security, housekeeping, waterproofing and upkeep of the beds and meals at this centre.

The same month, the NGO announced that it would work closely with Ek Saath – The Earth Foundation and the Roti Foundation to meet the daily food requirements of over 5,500 families for at least a month, set up a live kitchen to send out 2,000 freshly-cooked meals to hospitals and households in need and provide 3,00,000 meal kits to the underprivileged and daily wage workers in Maharashtra.

According to the statement, the team had also identified 2,500 daily wage workers in Delhi and provided them with basic essentials and grocery items for a month. In 2018, Shah Rukh Khan through the Meer Foundation also donated 50 wheelchairs on International Day of Persons With Disability.
