Emergency in Maldives: Former President & Chief Justice Arrested

President Abdullah Yameen has announced the Emergency in the Maldives. Immediately after the announcement of the President, former President Mamun Abdul Gayoom was arrested. He was running a campaign to remove the current President Abdullah Yameen from the post.

Chief Justice of the country Abdullah Sayeed and another judge of the Supreme Court have also been arrested. After reaching the top court premises in Malaya of the security forces, the police said in a brief statement that justice Abdullah Sayeed and Justice Ali Hameed are accused of corruption.

After the Emergency was declared, the Government of India issued circular advising its citizens not to travel to the Maldives for non-urgent travel. Apart from this, Indians living in the Maldives have also been advised to be alert while watching the tense situation. The government has asked the Indian citizens living in the Maldives to be alert at market and public places.
