Follow UsThe Maharashtra State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT), in the new State Curriculum Framework-School Education (SCF – SE), has proposed lowering the passing marks for maths and science from 35 to 20 marks in Class 10.
While passing with lower marks will come with a remark on the certificate that will bar the student from pursuing higher education courses requiring knowledge of mathematics or science, there will be no hassle to pursue other higher education courses.
According to officials, this is only in proposal stage and will be finalised when roll-out of SCF-SE is in its final stages, which is a few years away.
But the proposal has already started receiving positive responses from academics and school teachers who feel that fear of mathematics has been a serious concern among students causing them stress.
The state government has given two choices to students who score above 20 and below 35.
The student will be passed with a remark on their marksheet, or they can choose to reappear for the exam and score above 35 to pass without any remark.
According to teachers, many children interested in pursuing a career in arts, humanities, literature, etc., would have no qualms picking the first option, as the remark would not harm their higher education plans.
