Assam Govt introduces 6 tribal languages as medium of instruction in schools

To protect tribal communities’ interests and by the National Education Policy of 2020, the Assam government has decided to introduce six tribal languages as medium of instruction in the foundational stage of school education.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held on February 23 at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati, presided over by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

According to the Assam Chief Minister Sarma, six tribal languages—Tiwa, Deori, Rabba, Karbi, and Dimasa—will be introduced as medium of instruction (MoI) in the foundational stage of school education, followed by a regional language.

Meanwhile, the state cabinet also passed the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which recognises Manipuri as an Associate Official Language in four districts of the state: Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Hojai.
