Department of English, Faculty of Arts, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is proud to announce that 13 Ph.D. Research scholars out of 23 from Faculty of Arts of The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda have been awarded with SHODH Fellowship, 2020-21 (Scheme of Developing High Quality Research) by Education Department, Government of Gujarat. The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda has the highest number of SHODH awardees i.e., 132 students among all the universities of Gujarat.

All 13 students of Department of English will receive Rs. 15000/ per month for 2 years for full time PhD programme. The students will also be eligible to get additional Rs. 20,000/ as contingency grant per year. Thus, every student will receive Rs. 4,00,000/at the end of two years of the fellowship. Therefore, the Department of English will receive a total of Rs 52,00,000 in total. The aim of the Fellowship is to increase research orientation amongst students and to develop high quality research.

Earlier, the Department of English created history in the academic year 2020 2021 where 34 students were recommended for registration for the prestigious programme of Doctor of Philosophy which is the highest number amongst all the faculties of the university out of which 32 students got registered. The students registered come from different states of India like Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, including Gujarat. One of the Ph.D, Research scholars is an international student from Bangladesh who is also a recipient of ICCR scholarship.

This unprecedented feat of the Department has opened new avenues of interdisciplinary research promoting research in Indian languages, Indic knowledge systems, ELT, folk lore, folk narratives of Jhaverchand Meghani, Charan Literature of Gujarat and Rajasthan, Translation Studies, to the sparingly explored Graphic novels, to exploring the idea of nation in the 21st century.
