At least six people have died after a five-storey residential building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday afternoon. The building, known as Hostel Daze, reportedly housed several students, raising fears that more people could still be trapped under the debris.
The building collapsed at around 1:30 pm. Eyewitnesses said dozens of people may have been inside at the time. One shopkeeper near the site described the sound of the collapse as similar to an earthquake. Rescue workers reportedly heard students calling for help from beneath the rubble.AIIMS confirmed that six people died, while another six rescued people are undergoing treatment and are said to be in stable condition.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said around 80% of the debris had been cleared, with rescue teams continuing to search the remaining rubble.According to Gupta, the collapse may have been linked to water accumulation and repair work in the basement. Officials are also examining whether recent excavation or structural work weakened the building. However, the exact cause has not yet been officially established.The building was reportedly around 40–50 years old. Police have registered a case against the owner and are searching for him. An adjacent building was also evacuated as a precaution.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of private hostels and PG accommodations in Delhi, particularly in areas around Delhi University’s South Campus where many students live due to limited hostel facilities.
