Clashes were reported between devotees and police late Wednesday night in Vadodara city over the municipal commissioner’s announcement of a ban on immersion of Dashaman statues into rivers, lakes and canals.

Scuffle broke down between police and youth congress and NSUI leaders late at night in front of Siddharth Lake, Painter Tanaji’s lane in the city when they are on the way to place the Dashama idols at Navapura Dashama’s Vav after collection. About 15 Congress workers, including Amit Ghotikar, Devang Thakor and Mitesh Thakor, were detained by Navapura police.

While the devotees were worried about the immersion for the last 3 days, various organizations in Vadodara and the Congress had taken up the cause of immersion of the Dashama idols. For years, Dashama idols has been immersed in lakes after 12 o’clock at night. On Wednesday police arrested NSUI president Devang Thakor during Mataji’s Aarti when devotees from various organizations and Congress came to place the idol at night maintain social distance. Police then arrested Mitesh Thakor and Amit Ghotikar after arguments.

Congress spokesperson Amit Ghotikar said, this is an anti-Hindu government and does not pay attention to the Hindu festivals.  Opposition leader Chandrakant Srivastava then reached Navapura police station and control the situation after talked to PI of Navapura police station.

On the other hand, Team Revolution also faced the same thing after they were heading to place idols at Navlakhi ground after collecting the idols. Raopura police arrested Jai Thakor, Sonu More, Dirghash Bochre, Sunny Pawar. Opposition leader Chandrakant Srivastava also reached Navlakhi Maidan and control the situation after explaining to social workers Swajal Vyas, Narayan Rajput and Atul Gamechi. Police collected the idols and settled the case.

Due to the ban on Dashama idol by the Vadodara administration, the idols were placed by the police at Kapurai Chokdi from the devotees and was not allowed to be immersed. This leads to a despair in devotees. Karan Sena activist Arvind Sindha said, “We are going to take 600 Dashama idols from Diwalipura area and immerse them in Mahisagar river near Padra Dabka.

If they are not allowed they will go to Kavi Kamboi and immersed the idols in the sea. Municipal Councilor Rajesh Ayre said the immersion of the remaining idols has been planned by the Jai Hind group. So far about 8,000 idols have been immersed in the Mahisagar river at the Sindhrot checkdam.
