A massive wildfire in the Bald Range forests of British Columbia, Canada, has taken a dangerous turn. The fire is spreading so rapidly that local residents did not even have enough time to collect essential belongings from their homes. The fire’s footprint doubled in just one night, triggering panic across the region.
Authorities Declare Emergency as Wildfire Situation Worsens
Taking the severity of the situation into account, authorities have declared an emergency and ordered more than 20,000 people to evacuate to safer locations. Residents are leaving their homes as the evacuation orders remain in effect. Reports suggest that the situation is becoming increasingly critical.
Okanagan Lake and Wine-Producing Areas Among Worst Hit !
The wildfire is rapidly advancing along the western side of Okanagan Lake in southern British Columbia. Evacuations are underway in several surrounding communities, including Summerland and Peachland. According to officials, the Bald Range wildfire has now spread across approximately 9,500 hectares, making it extremely difficult to contain.The affected region is also one of Canada’s prominent wine-producing areas, with a large number of vineyards located across the region. The wildfire could therefore cause a major economic setback, particularly for the local wine industry.
A fire official compared the intensity of the blaze to a bomb explosion. Flames reportedly rose around 200 feet above trees that were themselves nearly 100 feet tall. The extreme heat and heavy smoke have also increased the risk of the fire spreading to new areas.As conditions deteriorated rapidly, several people became trapped amid the wildfire but were safely rescued by emergency response teams. The blaze has already destroyed several homes and caused extensive property damage, with losses running into crores of rupees.
