Popular Bhajan singer Narendra Chanchal passed away on Friday, i.e. 22nd January 2021. He was 80. The bhajan veteran breathed his last at 12:15 pm at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi following some health complications.

The Bhajan singer was admitted to the south Delhi hospital on November 27 and died after suffering from brain complications, as per the sources.

Tributes started pouring in on Twitter soon after with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying Chanchal “earned himself a special place in the world of bhajan singers through his voice”.

“I am deeply saddened by the demise of bhajan singer Narendra Chanchal. He had earned himself a special place in the world of bhajan singers through his voice. My thoughts are with his family and well-wishers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” tweeted the PM.

Meanwhile, cricketer Harbhajan Singh also took to Twitter and said that he was “deeply saddened to learn that iconic and most loved #NarendraChanchal ji has left us for the heavenly abode. In prayers for his soul to rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences to his family”. Popular singer Daler Mehndi paid “heartfelt condolences” to Chanchal’s “family and legions of fans”.

Born in Amritsar in 1940, Narendra Chanchal is surely the first name that comes to mind when one thinks of Mata ka Jagran. His distinct voice had earned him great fame. Not just in religious music, Chanchal had also won accolades in Bollywood. He had won the Filmfare Best Male Playback Singer Award for a Bollywood song ‘Beshak Mandir Masjid’ of the 1973 movie ‘Bobby’.

In March 2020, a video of Narendra Chanchal at a Holi function in Delhi’s Paharganj area had gone viral. In the video, the veteran devotional singer had sung a bhajan on coronavirus. The opening line of the song was – Dengue bhi aaya, swine flu bi aaya, Chikungunya ne shor machaya, Khabre ki ki ho na, O kitthon aaya corona, Maiya ji, kitthon aaya corona. Chanchal, in the song available on YouTube, underlined the significance of hand hygiene.
