Gearing up to meet an anticipated “heavy rush of customers”, bankers in West Bengal sought security from the state government in branches and ATMs to maintain law and order from Thursday when the banks will reopen after the centre’s demonetisation of high denomination of currency notes.
In a letter to the Chief Secretary, copies of which were marked to the Director General of Police and the city Police Commissioner, the State Level Bankers’ committee asked for police posting till the mad rush subsided after a time period.
“There will be a heavy rush of customers. We may not be able to meet the demand of deposit and exchange of notes,” SLBC sources said.
West Bengal has 7,984 bank branches and 10,781 ATMs.
Two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement to a stunned nation that notes of the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 would be demonetized from Tuesday midnight to tackle the black money menace, banks would resume operations on Thursday. However, ATMs would only unroll shutters from Friday.
