State-of-the-art transplant centre to enable five simultaneous surgeries; patients to benefit from local treatment.

A state-of-the-art transplant facility has been developed at AIIMS Bhopal, where up to five organ transplants can be performed simultaneously, including the state’s first lung transplant, expected to begin by the last week of April. The high-tech unit, built above the trauma centre, will enable lung, heart, kidney, and liver transplants under one roof, supported by a team of specialized doctors including surgeons, anesthetists, cardiothoracic experts, pulmonologists, and critical care professionals.

The facility is equipped with advanced machines such as heart-lung machines, IABP, and ECMO, which help maintain organ function during complex transplant procedures. According to Medical Superintendent Dr. Vikas Gupta, preparations for lung transplant are complete and a patient is currently being identified.

Once operational, the unit will significantly reduce the need for patients to travel to cities like Delhi, Chennai, or Hyderabad for treatment, lowering both expenses and waiting time. While approval for liver transplants is still awaited, AIIMS Bhopal has already conducted three successful heart transplants and is set to become the first institution in Madhya Pradesh to offer multiple organ transplants at a single centre.
