Establishing scientific and environment friendly waste management system
Taking a pro environment quantum leap towards PM’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,Ahmedabad cantt established a scientific and environment friendly waste management system for them. The project was conceived under aegis of Ahmedabad Cantt Board in coordination with Station HQ, Ahmedabad and Golden Katar Division.
It is mentored by United Nations Development because of its uniqueness in generating employment from waste, thereby also making Ahmedabad Cantonment a Zero Dust Bin Cantt. On the lines of Indore City which has distinguished itself as the cleanest city of India the project was partnered by UNDP and NGO Paryavaran Mitra. The NGO helped the Cantonment Board in mobilizing huge manpower of rag pickers and giving them opportunity to live a dignified life.
The nerve center of the project is state of the art waste segregation plant which segregates dry and wet waste. The wet waste is converted into vermin compost while Dry waste is segregated and processed. The organized rag pickers can get a monthly salary of Rs 5000 to 8000/-.
The project has drawn wide spread applause from all sections of the society involving RWA, teachers and children. The ever flourishing green environment of Ahmedabad cantonment bears testimony to this cohesive environment initiative and thoughtful model which needs to be imbibed by all sections of the society.
