Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has been honoured with the UAE’s prestigious First Class Order of Zayed II for his courage and quick thinking during a dangerous mid-air incident. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan recognised Captain Machchhar and fellow flydubai crew members for their bravery and commitment to passenger safety. The awards were presented by Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on October 27, 2026. The recognition comes after Captain Machchhar helped prevent a potential disaster aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30.

During the flight, Captain Machchhar was attacked by his co-pilot with a crash axe and suffered serious injuries. Despite being wounded, he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing cabin crew members, passengers and two off-duty pilots travelling on board to intervene and overpower the attacker. The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. The incident involved more than 170 people on board, and the coordinated response of the crew and passengers helped avert a possible tragedy. Captain Machchhar’s courage has received international attention, highlighting the importance of quick decision-making and professionalism during emergencies. His recognition by the UAE leadership has also brought attention to the contribution of Indian aviation professionals working internationally.
