During the monsoon, red ants can often be found around homes. Their bites may cause redness, swelling, itching and a burning sensation on the skin. Scratching the affected area repeatedly can damage the skin and may increase the risk of infection.
If you are bitten by a red ant, first wash the affected area with soap and clean water and dry it gently. You can then apply a cold compress or ice wrapped in a cloth for 10–15 minutes to help reduce itching, pain and swelling. For further relief, fresh aloe vera gel can be applied to the affected area to soothe the skin. Calamine lotion can also help reduce itching. Avoid repeatedly scratching the bite, as broken skin can make it easier for bacteria to enter.
For severe swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, signs of infection, or worsening symptoms, medical attention should be sought rather than relying only on home remedies.
