The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 6th August Thursday, has approved the GOBARdhan (Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan) scheme, a unified national bioenergy programme with a total outlay of 23,731 crore. The scheme will be implemented from FY 2026-27 to FY 2035-36 to accelerate the production of Compressed Biogas (CBG) across the country.
The GOBARdhan scheme seeks to transform cattle dung, agricultural residue, press mud, municipal organic waste, and other biomass into clean fuel, organic manure, and economic value. It is designed to promote a circular bioeconomy by converting waste into wealth while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and imported energy.
The Centre expects the initiative to drive nearly a ten-fold increase in domestic CBG production, create new employment opportunities in rural areas, attract private investment, and provide farmers with an additional source of income by enabling them to monetize agricultural waste and cattle dung. The scheme is also expected to strengthen India’s energy security and contribute to the country’s clean energy and sustainability goals.
